It aims to provide an approach to drawing in color that is fully illustrated. There are several examples including invaluable step by step demonstrations. While this edition incorporates a significant amount of digital rendering techniques, the book still covers an extensive range of drawing using markers and color pencils as primary drawing mediums.
Part 1 of the book is an overview of the basic phenomena, media papers, and techniques that can assists learners in illustrating various elements, materials and finishes in their drawings. Chapter 1 tries to cover some of the basic elements of design drawing essential for any color drawing, such as perspective, line quality, shade and shadows but are by no means comprehensive. The book is geared more towards mastering color application and techniques in perspective drawings. Chapter 2 introduces paper and media that works best for color design drawing. It presents and recommends a list of materials from palettes of markers, color pencils, pastels and papers.
Chapter 3 introduces a variety of techniques used to apply and adjust colors. These techniques are then implemented in chapter 4, creating a handbook of illustration on how to depict the most common architectural elements. Chapter 4 contains 257 pages, more than half of the total 425 page book, of detailed step by step rendering samples of wood, stone, leather, floor plans, reflections, brick, glass , trees skies etc. Chapter 5 concludes the first part of the book, it shows how to draw scale elements such as human figures and automobiles.
Part 2 of the book shows how the skills and techniques introduced in part 1 can be utilized to create compositions and presentation drawings. Chapter 6 focuses on color and compositions. Balance, unity, contrast and proportion and how they affect your drawings are discussed. Chapter 7 involves ways to plan your drawings, with emphasis on value composition as a means to creating a dramatic impact. Considerations are given to line drawings, creating a value strategy, scanning your drawings and approaches to color media. Finally chapter 8 presents a totally digital approach to color drawings.
This book is ideal for students, novice and intermediate artist who wishes to expand on their knowledge of color drawings. It can also be a handy material for accessing techniques, materials and methods as needed. Highly recommended!
